Madame B's Bakery is a speciality baker that's located in the heart of Raleigh, NC. It's said to be the home of gourmet jumbo cupcakes. It's owned and operated by Shanae Bryant. Shanae is a single mother of two and a native of Durham, NC. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Hospitality Administration and Management at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). NCCU is located in South Durham.
Akilah Davis, Race & Cultural Reporter, ABC11 News, did a story on the impact that inflation was having on small businesses on January 16, 2023. Madame B's was one of those featured small businesses. You can find that story by going here. At any rate, Shanae shared that Madame B's was facing closure at the end of the month due to the rising costs of ingredients to make her baked goodies. She further stated that she was unwilling to make tradeoffs towards cheaper ingredients because she wanted to maintain the same quality that's associated with her name. I had to make a point of stopping by after hearing her story. I did so on my way home from work on January 18, 2023 and I'm so glad that I did. I got a chance to meet not only Shanae, but her two delightful children as well. Her children helped me with my order as I teased, chatted with, and laughed with them about a myriad of different things.
Moving along, we planned to only eat one cupcake a piece but we ended up finishing them off that evening. I kid you not when I say that we ate them like they were the last supper and we were the disciples. With that being the case, I look forward to visiting again albeit with my family in tow. I say that because I learned today that Madame B’s is much more than a black owned establishment, it’s a little family. That little family includes everyone that walks through their doors. My only regret is that I didn’t know about it sooner. Had I known, I would’ve visited much sooner. I encourage all of you that are near or visiting he RDU area to do the same.
