National Screenwriters Day
The Pursuit of Happyness shares the story of Chris Gardner. Chris found himself caught in a web of challenging circumstances that left him homeless and with a toddler son. He was motivated by the promise he made to himself as a fatherless child to never abandon his own children. He and his son spent almost a year moving among shelters, soup lines, and sleeping in public restrooms.
He transformed from being a member of the poor and homeless to being one of the most powerful people on Wallstreet. But not only that it’s a story of a man who breaks his own family's cycle of fathers abandoning their children.
It’s one of my favorite books because it’s very similar to me and my dads. I started living with him when I was two years old. My dad made that same promise to God and to me that he would never abandon me. Me and my dad have been through a lot since I started living with him but he always found a way to make me happy. He and I wrote about it together in a book called The Unexpected Journey: Fire and Gold. Perhaps someone will make a movie about it one day. The Pursuit of Happyness will be my favorite book that’s been made into a movie until me and my dad's book is made into a movie as Dr. Raynor, Dean Academic Support Services, Shaw University suggests needs to happen.
